Lignin extraction with LignoBoost®

Wood is a composite of cellulose fibers embedded in lignin, a natural glue that keeps the fibers together. LignoBoost®, Valmet’s lignin extraction technology, makes it possible to extract lignin from pulp mill black liquor. Lignin is quickly becoming a valuable and renewable raw material in a wide range of industries.

Lignin can replace many fossil-based materials.

Lignin can create additional value for pulp makers.

Valmet can help you grow your lignin business.

LignoBoost plants in operation

There are four LignoBoost plants in operation today. The Valmet-built LignoBoost plants in Finland and the USA are built for commercial production and have a combined design capacity of 75,000 tonnes of lignin per year.

Valmet has also recently built a smaller LignoBoost plant in Brazil. This plant extracts smaller amounts of lignin that is used for experiments and small-scale production of different materials and products.

LignoBoost is a proven and reliable technology that has been developed with several industrial partners. The world’s first LignoBoost plant was built by RISE (then Innventia).

Tailoring the lignin to a certain quality

Extracted lignin can be tailored to match the intended end use. This is done with lignin tailoring processes developed by Valmet and its industrial partners. The tailoring processes can be supplied with new LignoBoost plants or installed as upgrades to existing ones.
